Without end-to-end connections due to sparse network density and sensor node mobility, routing in DFT-MSN becomes localized and ties closely.

Abstract: Multicast group communication is a useful augmentation to CORBA both for fault-tolerant and highly available applications and for groupware and cooperative work applications. However, different multicast group communication protocols are appropriate in different environments, e.g. local area vs. wide area networks, and Internet vs. ATM. Fault tolerance is the property that enables a system to continue operating properly in the event of the failure of (or one or more faults within) some of its components. If its operating quality decreases at all, the decrease is proportional to the severity of the failure, as compared to a naively designed system, in which even a small failure can cause total breakdown.

Fault tolerant designs are, by nature, high-density power and packaging designs. A typical fault tolerant design can have up to four times the standard interconnect as a non-fault tolerant design of similar size and volume. Interconnect is a major obstacle to the thermal designer due to the high pin count, signal routing, and cable density. Fault-tolerant software and hardware solutions provide at least five nines of availability – +% – for minimal unplanned downtime of between two and a half and five and a quarter minutes per year. While fault-tolerant hardware and software solutions both provide extremely high levels of availability, there is a trade-off: fault.
